2023-09-08: Content & Tooling Team Status Update

Hello Again!!

Greetings and a wonderful Friday to all! Another week done and dusted here for the CAT Team in Belfast and Pune. There’s a plenty of work going on behind the scenes to keep everything ticking…

Modules

Dropping support for SQL Server 2012!

It’s already time to bid adieu to the support for SQL Server 2012 in our modules. While we have had a great run with it for over a decade now, the time has come to upgrade ourselves to use latest versions of the SQL Server.

Tooling

Meet Gavin!

Some exciting news - this week, we welcomed Gavin Didrichsen to the team! Gavin transferred from puppet’s support team to tooling, bringing plenty of expertise and ideas with him. Here’s a few words from the Gavin:

“Hello I’m Gavin and have been at Puppet for almost 3 years. Most of this time has been with our fantastic support team, but more recently I’ve started working with the CAT team focusing on Tools to ease and enhance the developer experience for Puppet. I’ve been a puppet enthusiast ever since introducing Puppet to a TV set-top box development team almost 10 years ago. After automating a backend test system and reducing a week-long manual process to 10 minutes, I was pretty much sold. They still use the puppet automation!

I’m married and have 2 sons. We all love hanging out, going for walks. My wife and I try to go as often as we can to a local keep fit class nearby. Sometimes we just go for coffee.

I am on github as “gavindidrichsen” and community Puppet Slack as “Gavin Didrichsen”. "

Tool Adoption

Recently, there has been efforts by the team to revamp and redefine our tool adoption process. This will help ensure that we continue to provide and support new tools to help ease the load during your puppet development. Stay tuned for more on this in the coming weeks…

Internal Metrics

Finally, some work has been going on in the background to revamp our internal metrics. We provide a github metrics collector written in golang, which periodically collects repo data on each of our tools and pushes this to a Google BigQuery instace, these metrics are then surfaced in a grafana instance. You can check out the repo and docker image here for youself and alter to fit your use case.

Community Contributions

We’d like to thank the following people in the Puppet Community for their contributions over this past week:
